I am in the last moments of preparing for my yearly ritual of headed out into creation for what I describe to others as “the greatest show on earth.” It’s finally rifle season for Missouri whitetails! To sit in a tree with a rifle in the heart of November and watch the wonderfully created world arise and embrace another cold, still, Midwest morning; there is nothing else like it! I sit in stillness, listening to the sounds of the forest as it comes forth from its slumber. I watch as the creatures live out their daily routines as an orchestrated symphony of activity. All of this is meant to give glory to the God who created them (Gen 1:31) How do I not consider where is God’s grace in this moment?
Paul tells us in Romans 1:20 that “[God’s] invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made (ESV).” God’s grace in these moments is overwhelming, and I am grateful for the hours I can spend in awe and wonder of His handiwork. But this is only a small sliver of God’s grace in my life. Not only has He placed me in His created world, blessed me beyond measure with many loved ones and friends, provided for every need in my life, but the greatest display of His grace in my life is the death of His Son as my Savior.
Grace, God’s Word, and Real Life.
One of the most important things I impress upon the students in my youth ministry is to study God’s Word faithfully, intentionally and daily. I have worked diligently to show them how to ask the right questions of the text. One of the most impactful questions to ask when studying a piece of Scripture is, “where do we see God’s grace in this passage?”
It recently dawned on me that this is not a question we should only ask when studying God’s Word. But is a question we should ask ourselves in all situations. Maybe your company just reached a milestone it’s been working hard to reach. Where is God’s grace in this moment? Perhaps you have just left a meeting with the doctor that has altered the course of your life or the life of a loved one. Where is God’s grace in this moment? These can be hugely positive or negative events in your life, but one thing is for sure: you are always under a tremendous outpouring of God’s grace.
This isn’t limited to the big moments in life either. As you get into your truck and head to work on an ordinary morning ask, “Where is God’s grace in this moment?” As you watch your child learn a tough, but valuable, lesson are you seeing God’s grace in that moment? As you sit in corporate worship; do you take a moment to prayerfully consider the immeasurable grace of God? You are with the people of God, praising the name of God, and hearing Him Speak through his word. What incredible grace!
His Grace Abounds.
I implore you to stop passing over these precious moments in life. Consider the amazing grace of our Holy and Awesome God. Take time to worship God privately, and for who He is. Count your blessings in the big moments and in the small ones. Count them when the moments fill you with joy and fill you with fear. God’s grace is ever-present in your life. Look for it, recognize it and give glory and praise to your Creator and Redeemer!
